Ownership of the Edmonton City Centre complex has officially transferred to Edmonton-based developer Westrich Pacific, per Taproot Edmonton’s September 18 business roundup. Westrich plans to convert unused space in the downtown mall — which had been in receivership — into roughly 1,500 residential units, with earlier reporting from Retail Insider pegging the redevelopment investment in the hundreds of millions and construction potentially starting in early 2027.
It is one of the largest office-and-retail-to-residential conversion plays in Western Canada, and it lands as downtown Edmonton wrestles with distressed commercial assets — the same week’s roundup notes ProCura’s WSP Place tower and Azure/Cascadia lands remain under court-ordered sales processes.
What it means: A 1,500-unit downtown conversion resets the bar for multi-family ambition in Edmonton.
