What’s happened.
Western Canada Select for November delivery in Hardisty settled at US$25.55 a barrel below WTI on Friday, according to brokerage CalRock, compared with $25.20 on Thursday. The discount is more than $10 wider than at this point in last month’s trading cycle and wider than it has been since 2023.
Rory Johnston, founder of the Commodity Context newsletter, said the widening is being driven both by quality-related market weakness tied to an increasingly oversupplied US Gulf Coast fuel oil market and by the exploding cost of global marine shipping. Tanker rates have hit record highs in recent weeks following attacks on ships since the US-Iran war began in late February. Oil prices fell Friday as Middle East supply concerns eased, after President Donald Trump said the US would not attack Iran before next month’s midterm elections and spoke of “productive” talks to end the war.
What it means for your business.
A differential this wide pulls real dollars out of Alberta heavy oil and oil sands netbacks, and it arrives precisely when operators are setting 2027 budgets. Discretionary projects get deferred first, so suppliers whose pitch rests on capability alone are exposed. The firms that keep their line items are the ones who can show a buyer a payback period, a cost avoided or a maintenance interval extended — and who have that case documented and in front of procurement before the budget closes rather than after.
