What’s happened.

On October 19, 2026, Albertans voted by a wide margin to stay in Canada. The ballot carried ten questions, and the tenth asked whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a binding vote on separation. Turnout was heavy before election day: Elections Alberta reported 1.3 million people, about 43% of eligible voters, had already cast a ballot when advance voting closed on October 17. The result and the live count were reported by LiveWire Calgary, with a timeline of how the question reached the ballot from BOE Report.

The run-up was not cost-free. Premier Danielle Smith’s government spent $4 million on an advertising campaign urging people to vote to stay, and in September published a University of Calgary report it had commissioned estimating that the first five years of an independent Alberta would cost between $50 billion and $170 billion — the report cautioned that the figure could swing sharply on factors outside Alberta’s control. A separatist petition gathered about 223,000 signatures before a Court of King’s Bench judge quashed it in May for failure to consult First Nations as the Constitution requires. All of that uncertainty sat on top of every long-dated contract, lease and project sanction decision in the province for more than a year. It no longer does.

What it means for your business.

The vote settled where Alberta stands. Now the work is building. The 2027 projects taking shape, from pipelines and LNG to data centres and the trades that feed them, need Alberta suppliers on the job, and the budgets behind them are being set between now and December. A year of uncertainty made buyers cautious and kept suppliers in their own corner. That's over. If a proposal stalled this year over "wait and see," go back to that buyer now with a plan for the whole program, not one job, and with the Canadian partners you can bring to the table. Look past the province line while you're at it. A supplier that can serve a customer wherever the work is, and show up with others who can too, has more of it to win.

Next step: Before November, list every proposal that went quiet in 2026 and every buyer whose 2027 program you could serve beyond one job. Reach out to each with what you can commit to for the full program and who you'd bring with you, and ask for a decision date this quarter.
