What’s happened.
Statistics Canada counted 23,096,000 Canadian visits to the United States in 2025, down from 30,185,000 in 2024. That is 7.1 million fewer trips, a 23.5% drop, and Canadian-resident return crossings from the US fell 25.4% year over year. Spending fell too: Canadians spent C$3.3 billion less in the United States, taking the total down to C$18.8 billion. Leisure trips took the heaviest hit, down 21.5%, or 3.2 million trips.
Las Vegas shows what that looks like in one city. Preliminary figures from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the body that tracks visitors and markets Southern Nevada, and reported by the Las Vegas Sun, show 1,196,300 Canadian visitors in 2025, down 17.4% from 1,448,700 the year before. Some downtown hotels reportedly offered Canadians a one-for-one exchange on their dollars to win them back. Statistics Canada links the shift to the change in US administration in early 2025 and the tariff dispute, the fight over taxes each country charges on the other’s goods, which pushed Canadians toward buy-Canadian choices. A fuller breakdown of the numbers is in this analysis of the Canadian pullback.
The critical part for Canadian operators is where the money went. Domestic Canadian travel rose by 5.0 million visits and overseas trips rose by 1.3 million, almost fully replacing the US trips that were cancelled. The spending was redirected, not lost.
What it means for your business.
If you run a Canadian resort, ski hill, hotel group or multi-day experience business, 5 million extra domestic trips a year is your market, and it is made up of people who used to fly south in winter. They are used to sun, warmth, entertainment and a packaged price, so a generic "book direct" message will not reach them. Build and price a winter offer against the trip they are no longer taking, and get it in market before holiday booking closes.
Next step: Launch one winter package aimed at the lapsed US winter traveller — all-in pricing, warmth, entertainment — before the holiday booking window closes.
