The Alberta government refreshed its accommodation occupancy dashboard on Monday, September 21 with the latest monthly print for the province’s accommodation sector. Alongside Travel Alberta’s hotel performance dashboards, which track occupancy, average daily rate and RevPAR by market, operators now have current benchmarks covering the heart of the summer season.
The timing is useful. Shoulder season is when winter budgets, rate strategies and marketing plans get locked, and this year the demand mix is shifting under operators’ feet — domestic travel is normalizing back toward the U.S. while American and overseas inbound grows. A property that beat the provincial and market print can lean into what worked; one that lagged it has a clear signal that the problem is share, not the market.
What it means: Before setting winter rates and budgets, run your summer occupancy and ADR against the provincial and market benchmarks. If you underperformed the market print, the gap is addressable — channel mix, direct booking strength and campaign timing are usually the levers — and it is far cheaper to fix in October than in January.
