What’s happened.

Toronto- and New York City-based Mecka AI has raised a $60-million USD ($86-million CAD) Series B led by Sequoia Capital. New backers include Nvidia, the corporate venture arms of Microsoft and Qualcomm, and Samsung, alongside existing investors Kindred Ventures, Framework Ventures and Neo. DoorDash co-founder and CEO Tony Xu, former ServiceNow and Snowflake CEO Frank Slootman, and former Tesla Optimus head Milan Kovac also participated. TechCrunch had reported last month that the round was being raised at a valuation of about $500 million.

Mecka is building what it calls “the data and deployment layer” for physical AI, sourcing real-world data from body sensors and iPhones to train humanoids and other robots. The company’s argument is that this data cannot be scraped from the internet the way text, images and video can — and demand is booming. The two-year-old company said it surpassed a $100-million USD run-rate in June and expects to reach $300 million by the end of this year. The capital will go toward scaling data infrastructure, deepening its internal research lab, and building out the commercial robot deployment layer. It follows $60 million USD in Series A financing announced earlier this year and the acquisition of bootstrapped Vancouver startup Docula.

Set aside the robotics specifics and what remains is a template. The round was won on two things: a defensible, non-scrapable data asset, and revenue that can be stated plainly. In a quarter where Canadian funding has been under pressure, that combination is what cleared the bar.

What it means for your business.

For Canadian AI, data and analytics companies, the lesson is in how the story is constructed rather than the sector it sits in. Investors and enterprise buyers are both rewarding a clear answer to "what do you have that cannot be replicated" and a number that demonstrates commercial traction without qualification. If your category narrative still leads with model capability or feature breadth, it is competing in a crowded field; leading with proprietary data position and proven revenue is the framing that is currently getting funded and bought.
