Calgary’s Kanin Energy Closes $138M to Scale Waste-Heat-to-Power Across North America

Calgary- and Houston-based Kanin Energy has closed a $138-million CAD round, anchored by US$50 million each from S2G Investments and the Canada Growth Fund, BetaKit reported September 21. Kanin captures industrial exhaust heat and converts it to electricity under an energy-as-a-service model — customers pay for power, not infrastructure — and the new capital funds project development across Canada and the US.

The investment thesis is a read on the market itself: S2G pointed to rising power prices, grid congestion, and reliability constraints pushing industrial companies to rethink how they source electricity. CEO Janice Tran was candid that fundraising remains hard for non-AI companies amid tariff uncertainty — the round came with board concessions — which makes a close of this size in the current climate the more notable.

What it means: For Alberta industrial operators, waste heat is becoming a monetizable asset rather than a disposal problem, and well-capitalized counterparties now exist to develop those projects. For the province’s cleantech sector, a nine-figure round closed in Calgary in this funding market is evidence that industrial energy technology remains one of Alberta’s most exportable categories.
