What’s happened.

Toronto’s BioRender has launched Leo, an AI agent purpose-built for generating scientific figures and the latest addition to the company’s suite of AI tools. Researchers could already prompt BioRender’s platform to produce figures; a company spokesperson told BetaKit that Leo now provides expert guidance throughout the process as scientists plan, sketch and build images “in the same fashion as a trained medical illustrator,” drawing on a library of scientist-vetted icons and templates and using the best available AI model at each step.

The more instructive part is the positioning. “Nearly every week, a new AI image-generation tool is released,” co-founder and CEO Shiz Aoki said in a statement. “But scientists can’t rely on them because they treat scientific figures the way they would any other type of illustration. Leo is designed differently. It doesn’t jump from prompt to picture.” The company frames the product against a specific problem — the erosion of trust in science caused by a proliferation of AI-generated images — and claims greater fidelity than general-purpose tools because of the domain-specific asset library behind it. That is a defensibility argument, not a feature announcement, and it is aimed squarely at the objection every vertical software vendor now hears: why would we pay you when a general model can approximate this?

What it means for your business.

If you are shipping AI features this year, the two decisions that matter are packaging and proof. Arriving as part of the platform a customer already pays for sets a different expectation than a separately priced add-on, and the claim that wins in a vertical market is domain accuracy backed by proprietary assets or data, not speed or novelty. Audit what your AI messaging actually asserts — if a general-purpose tool could make the same claim, it is not yet a position.
