What’s happened.

Unifor, the union that represents more than 9,000 Stellantis workers in Canada, says 97.3 per cent of members who voted have authorized a strike. That is a mandate, not a walkout: neither side has asked for a “no board” report, the legal step that must happen before workers can lawfully stop work. The previous contract expired on Sept. 20 with no new deal, and the two sides are stuck on job security and the future of the idled assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario. Talks hit a wall on Sept. 11, when Stellantis signed a memorandum of understanding — an early, non-binding agreement — with defence vehicle maker Roshel about a possible sale of that Brampton plant. More than 2,000 workers have already been laid off there. Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin said the company remains committed to bargaining in good faith, while Unifor’s Stellantis bargaining chair James Stewart called strike action “a last resort” (briefs.co, Canadian Manufacturing).

For the shops that feed assembly plants, the number that matters is not 97.3 per cent, it is how many weeks of payroll you can cover if releases stop with little notice. Auto programs run on short order windows, so a stoppage shows up in your shipping dock within days and in your bank account within weeks. The same uncertainty cuts the other way too: a plant that changes owners, as Brampton may, rewrites supplier lists.

What it means for your business.

If you run a machine shop, stamping plant or component business with Stellantis Canada in your customer mix, treat this as your warning window rather than a headline. Work out now how many weeks of payroll and fixed costs you can carry with those releases paused, talk to your bank before you need to, and avoid buying raw material against releases that may not be called. Then use the quiet to chase work outside automotive — defence, infrastructure and energy buyers are active — so one assembler's labour fight never sets your year again.

Next step: This week, calculate how long your shop can run with Stellantis releases paused, and call your bank and your top three non-auto prospects before a legal strike position is reached.
