Statistics Canada’s Monthly Survey of Manufacturing, released August 14, shows manufacturing sales rose 0.1% in June — the fifth consecutive monthly increase, and ahead of the consensus estimate of a 0.1% decline. Five straight months of growth through the most hostile trade environment in a generation is not the picture of a sector in retreat.

The signal for Alberta’s advanced manufacturers and specialized industrial producers is that underlying demand — domestic and export — is holding up better than the headlines suggest. Sectors and firms that kept order books diversified are carrying the gains.

What it means: Softness in sentiment plus resilience in actual sales is historically the window where market share moves — competitors pull back on business development while buyers keep buying. If you have been deferring a new-market push waiting for trade certainty, the sales data says demand is there now.
