WestJet’s winter 2026-27 sun schedule, announced August 17, is the airline’s largest yet: up to 1,252 weekly flights across 88 non-stop routes between Canada and Latin America and the Caribbean, a 12 per cent increase year over year. Alberta is where much of the growth lands. Calgary capacity to sun destinations rises 18 per cent, with new non-stop service to São Paulo and Mérida, twice-daily Los Cabos and additional Cancun frequencies. Edmonton capacity climbs 34 per cent, with weekly flights to Los Cabos and Montego Bay both doubling.

The schedule also arrives with the labour overhang cleared: WestJet’s cabin crew ratified a second collective agreement on August 24, removing the disruption risk that shadowed the summer. With Statistics Canada already showing Canadians’ overseas trips and spending growing at double-digit rates while domestic overnight trips slipped in the first quarter, more seats south from both Alberta hubs make it easier for the province’s own residents to take their winter budget out of the country.

What it means: Alberta mountain and urban properties are competing this winter with a cheaper, more frequent beach option than ever, so domestic winter demand has to be earned rather than assumed, ideally with early direct-booking offers and clear value messaging in September and October before sun packages are locked in. The one upside is inbound: a non-stop Calgary to São Paulo service opens a new Brazilian origin market for Rockies operators willing to build Portuguese-language content and trade relationships around it.
