A late-August system left Banff Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Kicking Horse white at higher elevations on August 30, with Sunshine posting “We’ve got a snow day on our hands! Hello winter!” and Lake Louise calling it the first snowfall of the season, according to Bow Valley Insider. The three Banff resorts are targeting an opening around November 7, weather permitting, with Kicking Horse pencilled in for December 11.
The season the snow is teasing carries real capital behind it. SkiBig3’s 2026-27 preview highlights Lake Louise’s Richardson’s Ridge expansion, roughly 200 acres served by a new high-speed quad completed earlier this year, alongside a new green run, additional glades, a new connecting route from Marmot to the Richardson’s base, an upgraded Top of the World chair and expanded snowmaking. Banff Sunshine returns its GOAT Club at Goat’s Eye Lodge and adds the Coco Lounge and a coffee and cocktail bar on the Centennial Day Lodge deck, while Mt. Norquay installs a new surface lift that triples its learning area and has published its “Norquay 100 Vision” for eventually replacing the North American chair.
What it means: The winter booking window for the Rockies opens the moment the first snow photos circulate, and that moment arrived this weekend. Mountain-corridor hotels, lodges, spas and experience operators that are in market in September with early-bird direct rates, ski-and-stay packages and content built around the new terrain will capture the intent that is forming now, rather than buying it back at a premium in November.
