Edmonton-headquartered Stantec reported second-quarter results on August 19 with backlog at a record $9.24 billion, up 17.5% — roughly 13 months of work — alongside net revenue of $1.78 billion and record margins, and the firm raised its 2026 outlook. Stantec has also joined Clark Builders and PCL on Meta’s $13-billion Sturgeon County data-centre campus, per Taproot Edmonton’s business roundup.
The read-through for Alberta’s design and engineering market is capacity: when the largest firms are carrying record backlogs anchored by data-centre, energy, and public-infrastructure mega-projects, mid-size architecture, engineering, and planning firms see more overflow work, more invitations to team, and more room to win land-development and residential mandates that the majors are too full to chase.
What it means: For mid-size A/E and planning firms, the next 12 months are a share-taking window — the firms that make their specific capacity and sector expertise visible to developers and municipalities now will catch the work the record-backlog majors can’t absorb.
