The Insurance Bureau of Canada announced August 11 that Homes by Avi is the first large-volume homebuilder in Alberta to make hail-resistant roofing standard on all new single-family homes, effective August 1, 2026. IBC says the upgrade can cut premiums by up to 50% in high-risk areas like Calgary. The release, available here, notes Alberta has already recorded eight catastrophic weather events in 2026 and has seen more than $8 billion in insured hail damage in recent years.
IBC is also asking governments to revive Calgary’s Resilient Roofing Rebate Program and to mandate hail-resistant materials for new construction in high-risk zones. That moves resilience from a marketing differentiator toward a code and insurance expectation, with implications for every builder, roofer and building-product supplier in the Calgary corridor.
What it means: Homes by Avi has claimed the resilience story first, and competing builders will need their own answer for buyers who now ask about hail. For roofing manufacturers, distributors and exterior contractors, this is a demand signal worth building product and messaging around before a mandate makes it table stakes.
