CanExport SMEs 2026-27: $31M Pool Tilts Sharply Away From U.S. Markets

The federal CanExport SMEs program is running a roughly $31-million pool for 2026-27, with only about $3.1 million designated for U.S.-targeted projects — a clear structural push toward non-U.S. market development, per the Trade Commissioner Service’s program update. Eligibility floors rose to three full-time employees and $300,000 in annual revenue, applicants must now pick U.S. or non-U.S. markets (not both), and the travel per diem jumped to $600. Agri-food projects now route through the separate AgriMarketing Program.

The redesign rewards exactly the kind of company Alberta produces in volume: established, revenue-generating manufacturers and product businesses ready to open a second or third international market. With this week’s tariff escalation, a funded market-diversification project has moved from nice-to-have to board-level priority.

What it means: If you’re an established exporter eyeing markets beyond the U.S., a CanExport application paired with a concrete market-entry plan is one of the cheapest ways to de-risk the next twelve months — and the smaller U.S. envelope means the non-U.S. stream is where the money actually is.
