Calgary payments company Helcim closed a $53-million CAD Series C led by BDC’s Growth Venture Fund, valuing the company at $250 million — up from $97 million at its Series B two years ago — with participation from Curql Collective, Headline, Aquiline, Information Venture Partners and Alberta’s Accelerate Fund, BetaKit reports. The company disclosed more than $150 million in annual recurring revenue and plans to build out its payments extension product as banks retreat from small-business payments.

Announced August 21, the round is a marker for Alberta’s B2B scale-up ecosystem: a bootstrapped-then-funded Calgary company compounding through a trade-war economy, growing on the strength of a North American merchant base rather than a single export channel.

What it means: Freshly funded scale-ups move fast on market expansion in the two to three quarters after a raise — if you sell into or alongside the payments and commerce stack, the window to build a relationship with Helcim’s ecosystem is now.
