The Alberta government says it will continue funding Avalanche Canada following a review of the organization, ending a stretch of uncertainty that began when the previous agreement expired in March. Days earlier, Avalanche Canada CEO Gilles Valade had publicly warned that the province’s roughly $250,000 annual contribution, in place since 2004, was still under review five months after the deadline and that service reductions in Alberta were on the table. Nearly one in five Canadian avalanche fatalities occurs in Alberta, and the organization’s forecasting underpins backcountry skiing, snowmobiling and guided touring across Kananaskis, the Bow Valley and the Rockies.
What it means: Winter product that depends on the backcountry, from guided ski touring and heli-access to snowmobile packages and lodge-based programs, can be sold with confidence again, and safety-forward messaging is a credible differentiator for operators building shoulder and winter demand.
