Ottawa will match the new U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar” with countermeasures taking effect September 8, targeting U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, Al Jazeera reports. Prime Minister Carney said the response is designed “to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses,” with the detailed product list to follow and support measures for affected industries to be announced the following week.
For Alberta operators the retaliation cuts the other way: many manufacturers and processors buy U.S.-made steel, components, electronics and equipment as production inputs. Those costs rise on September 8 unless sourcing changes or remission relief becomes available.
