B.C. Wildfire Smoke Is Rerouting Late-Summer Travel in Western Canada

Wildfires and smoke have disrupted the Okanagan’s peak season. Castanet reports event cancellations including Penticton’s Peach Fest, evacuation orders around Summerland, and businesses seeing revenue down 50–60% in a week. The disruption is spilling far beyond the fire zones: in the Columbia Valley — Radium, Invermere and Fairmont Hot Springs, roughly 300 km from the fires — operators report softer August bookings driven purely by perception, even though the region faces no immediate fire danger.

Tourism officials in both regions are urging travellers to keep plans in unaffected areas, but many trips are simply being redirected — and Alberta destinations are a natural beneficiary as travellers rebook late-summer and September getaways closer to home.

What it means: For Alberta operators, this cuts two ways. There is real, immediate demand to capture from travellers rerouting out of the B.C. Interior — current-conditions content, flexible booking policies and “skies are clear here” messaging convert that traffic. But the Columbia Valley’s experience is also a warning: smoke perception can suppress bookings hundreds of kilometres from any fire, so proactive, honest conditions communication is now a core piece of late-summer revenue protection.
