$938M Canada–Alberta water infrastructure deal sets up a November project list for housing-enabling servicing

The federal and Alberta governments announced a $938-million partnership on August 4 to fund water and wastewater infrastructure that unlocks new housing, combining more than $510 million in federal money over eight years with $428 million from the province. Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors is to produce the first project list by November 30, 2026, with cities, rural municipalities, and Indigenous communities eligible.

BILD Alberta CEO Scott Fash called it “critical infrastructure that supports our builders.” The program builds on the broader Canada–Alberta homebuilding partnership announced in Red Deer on July 29.

What it means: Servicing capacity is the hidden constraint on a lot of Alberta land, especially in fast-growing mid-sized municipalities and county fringes. Developers with constrained parcels have a roughly three-month window to work with their municipalities to get projects onto the first list — and a funded servicing timeline is a powerful story to tell lenders, partners, and buyers.
